Chemistry Unit 1: Introduction

We’re spending the fall semester on chemistry. I’m aiming for a level above normal middle school, but still below an honors high school class. The first unit was an introduction to the basic terms, periodic table, and the atom:

  • Crash Course chemistries: Preview, #1 The Nucleus, #2 Unit Conversion & Significant Figures, #3 The Creation of Chemistry - The Fundamental Laws
  • BrainPop - watch the videos and define their vocabulary: Atoms, Atomic Models, Chemical Bonds, Ions, Property Changes, Compounds and Mixtures
  • Worksheets on finding the element name for different symbols and the very basics of nomenclature (these were from this workbook)
My son was fascinated by the periodic table. We’ll explore it more in depth in October, once he has more of the basic information. We’ll start into the ACS Middle School Chemistry program in the next unit.
