8th Grade English: Grammar

Wow, grammar is really hard to teach! So, we’re starting with the basics: define the eight parts of speech and give 10 examples of each.

That worksheet is for the first two days. After that, my son will have short grammar lessons Mondays through Thursdays. We are going back to the book he used last year, but with a more deliberate goal. This time, he will focus on each part of speech for a few days.

When he’s comfortable with that, we’re going to give old fashion sentence diagramming a try. This is the closest I could find to what I wanted to use (cover and sample exercise):

What I am really looking for are exercises where you mark up the sentence without rewriting it. But, the catch is that the solutions have to be included. I found this next book at a used book store. We might switch to that after Christmas for a change of pace. It would focus on the grammar aspect of writing, not the content portion. That part is taken care of during writing time. Well, at least it’s addressed during that time!
